Description: I am offering two new wolf skull rattles, one for romance and one for desolation, to show the two extremes of the human relationship with wolves today.

This one is "Beauty"--but don't let the name fool you. She represents the overly romanticized image that many people today have of wolves, so highly mythologized that they're not even allowed to be animals, with sharp teeth and carnivorous ways, sometimes dangerous to livestock, pets, and even people. She is the lovely mask that is placed over the wolf's face. The skull is painted black with a variety of pretty, but ultimately meaningless, pretty symbols. The bones over her sinuses were missing, so I covered them in black leather, changing her profile just a bit.

The handle is 3/4" wooden dowel, wrapped in the foreleg skin from a black wolf, complete with all five claws, and wrapped with reclaimed leather straps and secondhand yarn braids. The brain case is full of small stones which create a sharp, not too loud rattle. This is a powerful ritual item, not to be used lightly, for while she is lovely, she carries the pretty falsehoods that humans have placed upon this species. However, she may also help to remove these masks and the blinders we wear about wolves, and help us to gain a more balanced and realistic view of the wolf so that we may share the Earth with them more fairly.

It's strange how separated the views about wolves are today.

You've got your wolfaboos and romantics in one corner, putting wolves on some great pillar.

And then you've got ranchers, fearful pet owners, and others who just hate the idea of wolves being around and have them permanently in mind as a symbol of danger and evil.

Neither group really seems to be able to appreciate wolves as normal animals. :/

This really is a gorgeous skull, though. I love the black and white color scheme. Kind of in contrast - things with wolves really aren't so black and white, right? ;P
